            ราชพฤกษ์ หรือ คูน (Cassia fistula) เป็นไม้ดอกในตระกูล Fabaceae เป็นพืชพื้นเมืองของเอเชียใต้ ตั้งแต่ทางตอนใต้ของปากีสถาน ไปจนถึงอินเดีย พม่า และศรีลังกา ดอกราชพฤกษ์เป็นดอกไม้ประจำชาติไทย นิยมปลูกเป็นไม้ประดับในพื้นที่เขตร้อนและกึ่งเขตร้อน เจริญเติบโตได้ดีที่สุดในที่โล่งแจ้ง สามารถปลูกได้ทั้งดินร่วนซุย ดินร่วนปนทราย ดินร่วนเหนียว ทนต่อความแห้งแล้งและดินเค็มได้ดี แต่ไม่ทนในอากาศหนาวจัด ซึ่งอาจติดเชื้อราหรือโรคใบจุดได้
      ราชพฤกษ์เป็นต้นไม้และดอกไม้ประจำชาติไทย ตามที่กรมป่าไม้ กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ ประชุมเรื่องการกำหนดต้นไม้และสัตว์ประจำชาติ ครั้งที่ ๒/๒๕๐๖ เมื่อวันที่ ๑๓ มีนาคม ๒๕๐๖ มีมติเป็นเอกฉันท์กำหนดให้ต้นราชพฤกษ์หรือคูน เป็นต้นไม้ประจำชาติ และตามประกาศสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี เรื่อง การกำหนดสัญลักษณ์ประจำชาติไทย ๓ สิ่ง เมื่อวันที่ ๒๖ ตุลาคม พ.ศ.๒๕๔๔ กำหนดให้ดอกไม้ประจำชาติ คือ ดอกราชพฤกษ์ (คูน) Rachaphruek (Cassia fistula Linn.)

          ต้นราชพฤกษ์เป็นไม้ยืนต้นผลัดใบ มีความสูง 8-15 เมตร ลำต้นมีผิวเปลือกสีขาวปนเทา ผิวเรียบมีรอยเส้นรอบต้น และรอยปมบริเวณที่เกิดของกิ่งอยู่เป็นบางจุดของลำต้น ใบมีสีเขียว ขอบเรียบ โคนใบมน ปลายใบแหลมขนาดใบกว้างประมาณ 2-3 เซนติเมตรยาวประมาณ 3-4 เซนติเมตร จะทิ้งใบก่อนออกดอก โดยจะผลัดใบจนหมดต้นในช่วงระยะเวลาสั้นๆระหว่างเดือนมีนาคม-เมษายนและจะผลิใบใหม่ในช่วงเดือนเมษายน-พฤษภาคมดอกมีสีเหลือง ออกดอกเป็นช่อตามซอกใบหรือตามกิ่ง ช่อดอกห้อยลงล่างช่อยาวประมาณ 20-40 เซนติเมตร แต่ละดอกมีกลีบสีเหลืองขนาดเท่ากัน 5 กลีบ

การออกดอกจะออกพร้อมกันทั้งต้นพร้อมกับการผลัดใบคือระหว่างเดือนมีนาคมถึงต้นเดือนพฤษภาคมผลมีลักษณะเป็นฝักยาวกลม ทรงกระบอก ฝักมีสีเขียวเมื่อแก่จะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีดำ ผิวเปลือกแข็งเรียบ ภายในฝักมีเมล็ดจำนวนมาก ความยาวของฝักประมาณ 30-50 เซนติเมตรการออกฝักจะเริ่มราวเดือนพฤษภาคมและฝักจะแก่ราวเดือนมกราคม-เมษายน ฝักแก่จะห้อยติดอยู่กับต้นช่วงระยะเวลาหนึ่ง หลังจากนั้นจะเริ่มร่วงราวเดือนเมษายนไปจนหมดต้น ซึ่งเป็นเวลาพอดีกับฤดูกาลออกดอกรุ่นใหม่
            คนไทยโบราณเชื่อว่าบ้านใดปลูกต้นราชพฤกษ์ไว้ประจำบ้านจะช่วยให้มีเกียรติมีศักดิ์ศรีเพราะคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ยอมรับว่าต้นราชพฤกษ์เป็นต้นไม้ที่มีคุณค่าสูงและยังเป็นสัญลักษณ์ประจำชาติไทยอีกด้วย   นอกจากนี้คนไทยโบราณเชื่ออีกว่าใบของต้นราชพฤกษ์เป็นสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์เพราะในพิธีทางไสยศาสตร์ให้ใบทำน้ำพุทธมนต์สะเดาะเคราะห์ได้ีดังนั้นจึงถือว่าต้นราชพฤกษ์เป็นไม้มงคลนาม
