ลักษณะทั่วไปเป็นไม้ยืนต้นผลัดใบสูงประมาณ 20 เมตร โคนมีพูพอน เปลือกสีดำแตกเป็นร่องลึก กิ่งอ่อนหรือช่อดอกมีขนสีน้ำตาล ใบ เป็นใบประกอบแบบขนนกเรียงสลับ ใบย่อย 10–20 คู่ ใบอ่อนสีแดง แผ่นใบย่อยรูปขอบขนาน หลังใบเป็นมัน ท้องใบมีขน ดอก เมื่อเริ่มบานจะมีสีแดง แล้วเปลี่ยนเป็นสีชมพูและสีสันตามลำดับ ออกดอกระหว่างเดือนกุมภาพันธ์-มีนาคม ผลเป็นฝักรูปทรงกระบอก
