ลักษณะทั่วไปเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดใหญ่ ไม่ผลัดใบ เรือนยอดเป็นพุ่มทึบ กลม หรือรูปเจดีย์ เปลือกหนาสีน้ำตาลดำแตกเป็นสะเก็ด กระพี้สีน้ำตาลอ่อน แก่นสีน้ำตาลอมเหลือง ใบ เป็นใบเดี่ยวรูปไข่แกมรูปหอก หรือรูปดาบ เนื้อใบค่อนข้างหนา ปลายใบเรียว โคนใบมนป้านและเบี้ยว หลังใบมีตุ่มเกลี้ยง ปลายโค้งแต่ไม่จรดกัน ออกดอกขนาดเล็ก สีขาว ออกเป็นช่อยาวตามง่ามใบและปลายกิ่ง กลิ่นหอม ผล รูปไข่ เกลี้ยง ปลายมนเป็นติ่งคล้ายหนามแหลม ภายในกลีบรองดอกที่ขยายตัวออกเป็นปีก รูปใบพาย
