แก้วเจ้าจอมเป็นต้นไม้ขนาดเล็กถึงขนาดกลางสูง 10 - 15 เมตร ไม่ผลัดใบ ลำต้นคดงอ กิ่งก้านเป็นปุ่มปมเป็นไม้เนื้อเเข็งมาก ต้นแตกใบพุ่มแผ่กว้างเหมาะเป็นไม้ปลูกในสนาม เปลือกของต้นสีเทาเข้ม กิ่งมีข้อพองเห็นเป็นปุ่มๆทั่วไป ใบ ประกอบแบบขนนกปลายคู่ มีใบย่อย 2 - 3 คู่ เรียงตรงข้ามคู่แกนกลางใบประกอบยาว 1 - 1.5 เซนติเมตร ก้านใบประกอบยาว 0.5 - 1.0 เซนติเมตร ใบย่อยไม่มีก้าน รูปไข่กลับ รูปไข่กว้างหรือรูปรีเบี้ยวเล็กน้อยมี 2 ชนิด คือ ใบย่อย 2 คู่ ออกดอกง่ายและชนิดใบย่อย 3 คู่ ออกดอกน้อยกว่าผิวของใบเป็นมัน ดอกเป็นดอกเดี่ยวสีฟ้าอมม่วงหรือสีฟ้าคราม และจะจางลงเมื่อใกล้โรยมีกลิ่นหอมผล มีเนื้อขนาดเล็ก รูปหัวใจกลับกดแบนลง สีเหลืองสดใส หรือส้มเมล็ดแข็งรูปไข่ เป็นต้นไม้นำเข้ามาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ปลูกอยู่ในวังสวนสุนันทา(ปัจจุบันคือสถาบันราชภัฏสวนสุนันทา)
