มะขามไทย ตะลูบ (นครราชสีมา), ม่องโคล้ง (กะเหรี่ยง-กาญจนบุรี), มอดเล ส่ามอเกล (กะเหรี่ยง-แม่ฮ่องสอน), มะขาม (ทั่วไป), หมากแกง (ละว้า-แม่ฮ่องสอน), อำเปียล (เขมร-สุรินทร์)
เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางจนถึงขนาดใหญ่ ใบเป็นใบประกอบ ออกเป็นคู่ เรียงกันตามก้านใบ ปลายใบและโคนใบมน ออกดอกเป็นช่อเล็กๆ อยู่ตามบริเวณปลายกิ่ง ขนาดเล็ก มีกลีบสีเหลือง ผลมี 2 ชนิด คือ ชนิดฝักกลมเล็กยาวเรียกว่า “มะขามขี้แมว” ชนิดฝักใหญ่แบนเรียกว่า “มะขามกระดาน” เมล็ดเป็นรูปค่อนข้างกลม ผิวเปลือกเกลี้ยงสีน้ำตาลเข้ม
