ลักษณะทั่วไป
ลักษณะทั่วไปของแคนตาลูป คือ มีลักษณะคล้าย ๆ แตงไทย คนไทยจึงเรียกว่า แตงเทศ หรือแตงฝรั่ง หรือแตงไทยฝรั่ง มีผลกลม ผิวของผลสีเขียว หรือสีน้ำตาลคล้ำ หรือสีเหลือง หรือสีขาว ทั้งนี้แล้วแต่พันธุ์ ผิวของผลหยาบ มีเปลือกแข็ง มีร่องลึกรอบ ๆ ผล เปลือกมีลายคล้ายร่างแหหรือตาข่ายสีขาว หรือสีฟางแห้งคลุมตลอดทั้งผล แต่บางพันธุ์ก็ไม่มี บางพันธุ์มีผิวเรียบ ๆ เมื่อสุกเนื้อในมีสีส้ม หรือสีจำปา มีกลิ่นหอม รสหวาน

การเผยแพร่สู่ประเทศไทย
แคนตาลูปเผยแพร่เข้ามาในประเทศไทยเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2478 โดยนำมาปลูกที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ แต่ไม่ได้ผลเนื่องจากแตงเป็นโรคตายเสียส่วนมาก ต่อมา ปี พ.ศ. 2493 - 2499 ได้นำมาทดลองปลูกที่เกษตรกลางบางเขน (มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ในปัจจุบัน) ปรากฎว่าได้ผลดี โดยเฉพาะแคนตาลูปพันธุ์ริโอโกลด์ จากสหรัฐอเมริกา ให้ผลบางผลมีน้ำหนักถึง 4 กิโลกรัม จึงได้มีการขยายการปลูกออกไปเรื่อย ๆ แต่เพิ่งได้ผลดีและปลูกกันเป็นอาชีพ แคนตาลูปเป็นผลไม้ซึ่งกำลังเป็นที่นิยมของคนไทย แหล่งที่ปลูกแคนตาลูปได้ผลดีในปัจจุบัน คือ อำเภออรัญประเทศ จังหวัดสระแก้ว เขตลาดกระบัง กรุงเทพมหานคร และที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่
สภาพที่เหมาะสม
แคนตาลูปเป็นพืชเมืองร้อน จึงชอบอากาศร้อนชื้น อุณหภูมิเฉลี่ยอยู่ระหว่าง 21 - 32 องศาเซลเซียส มีปริมาณน้ำฝนพอสมควร ไม่มีฝนตกชุกตลอดทั้งปี เพราะจะทำให้แคนตาลูปเป็นโรคโคนเน่าได้ง่าย ส่วนดินนั้นชอบดินร่วน ดินปนทราย หรือดินค่อนข้างเหนียวก็ปลูกได้ดี แต่ดินต้องเป็นดินที่มีการระบายน้ำและอากาศได้ดี ถ้าดินมีการอุ้มน้ำมากจะทำให้แคนตาลูปดูดน้ำเข้าไปมาก จะทำให้ผลของแคนตาลูปมีรสหวานน้อยและเนื้อไม่ค่อยกรอบ ดินที่ปลูกแคนตาลูปควรมีค่า pH อยู่ระหว่าง 6.5 - 7
